Pharmacological action
Xymelin is a vasoconstrictor drug for local use in ENT practice. Xylometazoline has an alpha-adrenomimetic effect. Causes narrowing of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, thus eliminating edema and hyperemia of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx.
Facilitates nasal breathing in rhinitis.
In therapeutic concentrations does not irritate the mucous membrane, does not cause hyperemia. The action occurs within a few minutes after application and lasts for 10-12 hours.
Indications
- Acute respiratory infections with rhinitis.
- Acute allergic rhinitis.
- Pollinosis.
- Sinusitis.
- Eustachyite.
- Otitis media (to reduce swelling of the mucous membrane of the nasopharynx).
- Preparing the patient for diagnostic procedures in the nasal passages.
Contraindications
- Arterial hypertension.
- Tachycardia.
- Severe atherosclerosis.
- Glaucoma.
- Atrophic rhinitis.
- Hyperthyroidism.
- Surgical interventions on the meninges (a history of).
- Children under 2 years of age (for nasal spray).
- Hypersensitivity to the drug.
- Use with caution in diabetes.
Use during pregnancy and lactation
During pregnancy and lactation, the drug should be used only after a careful assessment of the risk-benefit ratio for the mother and the fetus, it is not allowed to exceed the recommended doses.
Composition
Nasal drops 0.05% as a colorless, clear liquid contain:
Xylometazoline hydrochloride 500 mcg.
Excipients:
Sodium phosphate monosubstituted,
Sodium phosphate disubstituted,
Disodium edetate,
Sodium chloride,
Benzalkonium chloride,
Purified water.
Dosage and administration
nasal drops 0.05% are prescribed to children aged 2 to 6 years, 1-2 drops in each nostril 1-2 times / day.
The drug should be used no more than 3 times / day and for no more than 7 days.
Drug Interactions
Incompatible with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.
Overdose
Symptoms: increased side effects.
Treatment: carrying out symptomatic therapy.
