Pharmacological action
Antibacterial agent for topical use in ophthalmology, sulfanilamide derivative. It has a wide range of antimicrobial effects.
Has a bacteriostatic effect.
The mechanism of action is associated with competitive antagonism with PABA and competitive inhibition of dihydropteroate synthetase, which leads to impaired synthesis of tetrahydrofolate acid, necessary for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines.
Sulfacetamide is active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (including pathogenic cocci, Escherichia coli), Chlamydia spp., Actinomyces spp.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, it penetrates the tissues and fluids of the eye. It is absorbed into the systemic circulation through the inflamed conjunctiva.
Indications
Purulent corneal ulcers, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, gonorrheal eye diseases in newborns and adults, prevention of blenorrhea in newborns.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to sulfacetamide and other sulfonamide drugs.
Special instructions
Patients with hypersensitivity to furosemide, thiazide diuretics, sulfonylurea or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors may have an increased sensitivity to sulfacetamide.
Composition
1 ml drops contains:
Active ingredient:
sulfacetamide 200 mg.
Excipients:
sodium thiosulfate - 1 mg,
hydrochloric acid 1 M - up to pH 7.5-8.7,
purified water - up to 1 ml.
Dosage and administration
Apply 2-3 drops in the lower conjunctival sac of each eye 5-6 times / day.
For the prevention of blennorrhea in newborns, 2 drops of the solution are instilled into the eyes immediately after birth and 2 drops after 2 hours.
Side effects
Local reactions: itching, redness, swelling.
Drug Interactions
Sulfacetamide is not compatible with silver salts when applied topically.
Storage conditions
In a dark place, at a temperature not exceeding 15 РC
