Pharmacological action

Picoprep is a laxative, the active ingredients of the drug are sodium picosulfate, which stimulates the laxative effect in the colon, and magnesium citrate, which has a laxative effect due to osmotic effects of moisture retention in the colon. The effect of the drug is manifested in a strong leaching effect, which is combined with the effect of stimulating intestinal motility, which determines its use for bowel cleansing before radiographic examinations, colonoscopy or surgical procedures.

Special instructions

With extreme caution, you should use the drug after recently performed surgical procedures on the gastrointestinal tract, as well as in patients with impaired renal function, heart disease or inflammatory bowel disease.

The drug should be used with caution in patients using drugs that can affect the water and / or electrolyte balance, for example, diuretics, corticosteroids, lithium.

Since Picoprep may alter the absorption of drugs intended for regular oral administration, in such cases it should be used with caution, there have been separate reports of convulsions in patients taking antiepileptic drugs, which previously made it possible to successfully control the course of epilepsy.

Insufficient oral intake of water and electrolytes can lead to clinically significant deficiency, especially in debilitated patients. Therefore, elderly patients and debilitated patients, as well as patients at risk of developing hypokalemia, should be under medical supervision. Patients with signs or symptoms of hyponatremia may need to take quick corrective measures to restore fluid balance and electrolytes. Adequate fluids should be consumed.

The period of bowel cleansing should not exceed 24 hours, since a longer procedure may increase the risk of disturbing the water or electrolyte balance.

The drug contains lactose, so it should not be used in patients with lactose intolerance.

The drug is not intended for use as a general laxative.

Children

The drug is used in children from 1 year under the supervision of a doctor in a hospital.

Use during pregnancy or lactation

Clinical experience with the use of Picoprep during pregnancy is limited, so the drug should be used with caution, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Sodium picosulfate, magnesium citrate are not excreted in breast milk.

Features of the effect of the drug on the ability to drive vehicles and maintain moving mechanisms

Given the possibility of convulsions, seizures or confusion of consciousness, you should refrain from driving vehicles or working with other mechanisms while using the drug.

Composition

1 packet contains:

Active substances: sodium picosulfate 10 mg, magnesium oxide 3.5 g, anhydrous citric acid 12 g

Excipients: potassium bicarbonate, sodium saccharin, natural dry orange flavoring (gum arabic (E414), lactose, ascorbic acid (E300), butylhydroxyanisole (E320).

Dosage and Administration

It is recommended that you switch to a low-calorie diet the day before hospitalization. To prevent dehydration during the use of the drug, it is recommended to drink a sufficient amount of water (about 250 ml per hour). The drug is used internally.

Rules for the preparation of

powder The contents of one packet are diluted in a glass of water at room temperature (about 150 ml), mixed for 2-3 minutes and the resulting solution is drunk. If the solution is heated, wait until the solution cools to a temperature suitable for drinking.

Adults (including the elderly)

The contents of one packet are diluted with water, as described above, and taken in the evening the day before the procedure, repeated after 6-8 hours.

Children

The remainder of the solution is poured. The prepared solution is not stored.

Drug Interactions

Since Picoprep is a laxative, it increases the rate of gastrointestinal transit. Consequently, the drug may alter the absorption of other oral medications (eg, antiepileptic and antidiabetic, contraceptives and antibiotics).

The effectiveness of the drug Picoprep is reduced while taking laxatives that increase the volume of intestinal contents.

Caution is advised to use the drug in patients already taking drugs that cause hypokalemia (such as diuretics or corticosteroids, as well as drugs that are associated with a particular risk of developing hypokalemia, for example, cardiac glycosides). With caution, Picoprep should be prescribed to patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or drugs that induce the syndrome of inadequate secretion of antidiuretic hormone, for example, tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, antipsychotic drugs, and carbamazepine drugs, as they can increase the risk of water retention and / or electrolyte imbalance.

Overdose

Symptoms: may develop profuse diarrhea.

Treatment: Carry out general supportive treatment and ensure adequate fluid intake.
