pharmachologic effect
Xylometazoline belongs to the group of local vasoconstrictors (decongestants) with alpha-adrenomimetic activity. It causes narrowing of the blood vessels of the nasal mucosa, eliminating edema and hyperemia of the nasal mucosa, restores the patency of the nasal passages, and facilitates nasal breathing.
The action of the drug occurs 5-10 minutes after its application and lasts up to 12 hours.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, the drug is practically not absorbed, therefore its concentration in the blood plasma is very low (it is not determined by modern analytical methods).
Side effect
From the immune system: very rarely - hypersensitivity reactions (angioedema, rash, itching).
From the nervous system: often - headache; rarely - insomnia, depression (with prolonged use in high doses); very rarely - anxiety, fatigue, paresthesia, hallucinations and convulsions (mainly in children).
From the senses: very rarely - a violation of the clarity of visual perception.
From the side of the cardiovascular system: rarely - a feeling of palpitations, increased blood pressure; very rarely - tachycardia, arrhythmia.
From the respiratory system: often - irritation and / or dryness of the nasal mucosa, burning, tingling, sneezing, hypersecretion of the nasopharyngeal mucosa; rarely - after using the drug, there may be an increase in edema of the nasal mucosa (reactive hyperemia), nosebleeds.
From the digestive system: often - nausea; rarely - vomiting.
Local reactions: often - burning at the site of application.
If the patient develops or aggravates the above side effects, or any other side effects are noted, he should inform the doctor about it.

Application in children
Contraindication: children under 6 years of age (for nasal spray dosed 90 mcg / dose); children under 2 years of age (for nasal spray dosed 45 mcg / dose).
special instructions
Sea water, which is part of the drug, helps to maintain the normal physiological state of the mucous membrane of the nasal cavity due to the ability to improve the function of the ciliated epithelium and normalize the production of mucus in the goblet cells of the mucous membrane.
It is not recommended to apply continuously for more than 7 days.
The recommended doses should not be exceeded, especially in children and elderly patients.
Long-term (more than 7 days) use or overdose of xylometazoline can weaken the therapeutic effect of the drug, and also increase the risk of reactive hyperemia and atrophy of the nasal mucosa.
Patients with long QT syndrome receiving xylometazoline may be at increased risk of developing serious ventricular arrhythmias.
If a medicinal product has expired, it should not be thrown into wastewater or outdoors. Place the medication in the trash can. These measures will help protect the environment.
Influence on the ability to drive vehicles and mechanisms
If the dosage regimen is observed, xylometazoline does not affect concentration and psychomotor speed.
Overdose
Symptoms: in case of an overdose of the drug, the clinical picture is an alternation of phases of excitation of the central nervous system (anxiety, excitement, hallucinations, convulsions) with phases of depression of the central nervous system (decrease in body temperature, lethargy, drowsiness, coma). The following symptoms may also occur: miosis, mydriasis, increased sweating, fever, pallor, cyanosis, nausea and vomiting, tachycardia, bradycardia, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, palpitations, increased blood pressure, decreased blood pressure up to shock, pulmonary edema, depression breathing and apnea, psychogenic disorders.
In children with overdose, dominant central effects are observed with convulsions, coma and bradycardia, apnea, as well as an increase in blood pressure, followed by arterial hypotension.
Treatment: symptomatic, under medical supervision.
In case of accidental ingestion of the drug inside - the introduction of activated carbon, gastric lavage.
In case of severe overdose, intensive care is indicated in a hospital. In severe cases, non-selective alpha-blockers can be used to lower blood pressure, antipyretics, intubation, and mechanical ventilation.
Drug interactions
The simultaneous use of xylometazoline with MAO inhibitors, tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants, other local vasoconstrictors (decongestants), as well as other drugs that increase blood pressure, can lead to an increase in blood pressure, therefore, the simultaneous use of these drugs is contraindicated. If the patient uses the above or other drugs (including over-the-counter), consult a doctor before using SnoopЃ.
