SENNA LEAVES (Sennae folia)

Description:

Senna leaves contain anthraglycosides, flavonoids, resinous substances and other biologically active substances.



Description:

A mixture of pieces of leaves, petioles, thin stems, petals, sepals, fruits. The color is grayish-green or light green interspersed with yellowish, whitish, brown. The smell is weak. The taste of the aqueous extract is slightly bitter, with a slimy sensation.



Pharmacotherapeutic group:

Herbal laxative.



Pharmachologic effect:

A decoction (infusion) of senna leaves has a laxative effect. The therapeutic effect occurs within 8-12 hours after taking the drug.



Indications for use:

Chronic constipation, stool regulation for hemorrhoids, proctitis, anal fissures.



Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to the drug, intestinal obstruction, abdominal pain of unknown origin, disorders of water and electrolyte metabolism, acute inflammatory diseases of the abdominal cavity, strangulated hernia, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, uterine bleeding, cystitis, spastic constipation. Pregnancy, children under 12 years of age.



Method of administration and dosage:

4 filter bags (6 g) are placed in a glass or enamel dish, 200 ml (1 glass) boiling water is poured, covered and infused for 15 minutes, periodically pressing the bags with a spoon, then squeezed out. The volume of the resulting infusion is brought to 200 ml with boiled water.

Take 1/2 cup orally in the evening after meals. The course of treatment is 2-3 weeks.

It is recommended to shake the infusion before use.



Side effect:

Possible allergic reactions, abdominal pain, flatulence, diarrhea. With prolonged use - colitis.



Overdose:

Symptoms: diarrhea, violation of water and electrolyte metabolism. Treatment is symptomatic.



Interaction with other medicinal products:

Senna preparations reduce the absorption of tetracycline.



Special instructions:

With prolonged use of senna drugs, addiction can develop, so it is advisable to alternate it with other laxatives.
