Pharmacological properties of
A drug for symptomatic topical treatment of rhinitis. Phenylephrine hydrochloride is an alpha-1-adrenergic receptor agonist (sympathomimetic), which has a vasoconstrictor effect by stimulating alpha-1-receptors in the nasal mucous membranes, reduces swelling of the mucous membranes and tissue hyperemia, congestion in the nasal mucosa, and also improves patency nasal airways. Restoring the airway of the nasopharynx improves the patient’s well-being and reduces the risk of possible complications caused by stagnation of the mucous secretion.
Pharmacokinetics
When applied topically, systemic absorption is low.
Indications
Symptomatic treatment: to facilitate breathing through the nose for colds, flu, hay fever or other allergic diseases of the upper respiratory tract, accompanied by acute rhinitis or sinusitis.
Contraindications
Increased individual sensitivity to the ingredients of the drug,
diseases of the cardiovascular system (including severe atherosclerosis, angina pectoris, tachycardia)
thyroid disease (thyrotoxicosis)
diabetes mellitus
arterial hypertension
simultaneous administration of MAO inhibitors (as well as 2 weeks after their withdrawal)
children under 4 years of age.
Caution with children (6 years old).
Use during pregnancy and lactation
There is no sufficient experience with the use of the drug during pregnancy.
The use of the drug during pregnancy and lactation (breastfeeding) is only possible if the intended benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or child.

Side effects
Local reactions: burning, tingling, or tingling sensations in the nose.
Systemic effects: headache, dizziness, palpitations, arrhythmia, increased blood pressure, sweating, pallor, tremor, sleep disturbance.
Drug interactions
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (procarbazine, selegiline), tricyclic antidepressants, maprotiline, guanedrel, guanethidine enhance the pressor effect and phenylephrine arrhythmogenicity (with systemic absorption).
Thyroid hormones with systemic absorption of phenylephrine increase the (mutually) associated risk of coronary insufficiency (especially with coronary atherosclerosis).
Overdose
May occur with heart rhythm disorders, increase in blood pressure, excitation.
Consult your doctor for overdose.
Treatment is symptomatic.
