PenStrep suspension for injection 100ml
DESCRIPTION
Pen-Strep is a complex antibacterial preparation for horses1, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, dogs and cats. It is a sterile white suspension for injection. During storage, sediment formation is allowed.
COMPOSITION
1 ml contains procaine penicillin 200 mg and dihydrostreptomycin sulfate 250 mg, as well as auxiliary substances.
PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin sulfate, which are part of the drug, procaine, exhibit synergistic action, thereby enhancing each other's action and expanding the spectrum of the drug's antimicrobial activity. Procaine penicillin has bactericidal properties and is active against gram-positive microorganisms, including Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Corynebacterium spp., Listeria spp., Clostridium spp., Erysipelothrix spp. Its mechanism of action is to block the synthesis of peptidoglycan (the main component of the bacterial cell wall), leading to the death of the microorganism. Dihydrostreptomycin sulfate is an antibiotic from the aminoglycoside group. Has a pronounced bactericidal effect on gram-negative microorganisms, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Pasteurella spp., Klebsiella spp., Haemophilus spp., Campylobacter spp. The mechanism of its action is associated with a violation of protein synthesis by the ribosomes of the microbial cell. After intramuscular administration of the drug procaine, penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin sulfate are absorbed into the bloodstream and penetrate into the organs and tissues of the animal, reaching maximum concentrations in the blood after 60 minutes. Antibiotics are excreted from the body mainly with urine and bile, in lactating animals - partly with milk. PenStrep, according to the degree of its effect on the body, is classified as a moderately hazardous substance. INDICATIONS
It is prescribed for horses, cattle, sheep and pigs for the treatment of bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, including pneumonia, atrophic rhinitis, listeriosis, meningitis, septicemia, toxemia caused by mastitis, infections of the genitourinary system, salmonellosis, as well as secondary bacterial infections.
DOSAGE AND APPLICATION
PenStrep is injected only intramuscularly at a dose of 1 ml per 25 kg of animal weight once a day for 3 days. Before use, the contents of the vial are thoroughly shaken until a homogeneous suspension is obtained. The maximum volume of the drug when administered in one place should not exceed 15 ml for horses, 6 ml for cattle, 3 ml for sheep and 1.5 ml for pigs. If no noticeable clinical improvement occurs within 2 to 3 days, it is recommended to retest for the sensitivity of microorganisms to penicillin and dihydrostreptomycin.
SIDE EFFECTS
Lactating sows and fattening pigs may experience salivation, vomiting, impaired coordination of movements, and general malaise. With increased individual sensitivity of animals to the drug and the appearance of signs of allergy, its use is stopped.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Hypersensitivity to penicillin antibiotics and aminoglycoside antibiotics. Renal and cardiovascular failure. Simultaneous or sequential use of PenStrep with other ototoxic and nephrotoxic drugs (neomycin, kanamycin, gentamicin) is not allowed due to a possible increase in oto- and nephrotoxic effects. The drug is not recommended to be administered to females in the last third of pregnancy. PenStrep should not be used by sheep whose milk is used for food purposes.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS
Slaughter of cattle for meat is allowed no earlier than 23 days, pigs - no earlier than 18 days, sheep - no earlier than 31 days after the last use of the drug. The meat of animals that were forcedly killed before the expiration of the specified period can be used for feeding fur animals or for the production of meat and bone meal. Milk of cows during the treatment period and within 60 hours after the last injection of the drug PenStrep must not be used for food purposes. Such milk after boiling can be used for feeding animals.
SHELF LIFE AND STORAGE
