Omega-3 and Omega-6 PUFAs play an important role in the body, as they are the starting material for the production of eicosanoids - hormone-like substances. Eicosanoids regulate smooth muscle tone, affecting blood pressure, the state of the bronchi, intestines, and uterus. Regulates the secretion of water and sodium by the kidneys. Affect blood clotting. Regulate the condition of the gastric mucosa. Participate in the formation of the process of inflammation with tissue damage and infection (pain, edema, fever). Some eicosanoids are neurotransmitters and act as hormones.
In the body, eicosanoids are synthesized from fatty acids of the Omega-3 family (the most important of which are alpha-linolenic, docosahexaenoic, eicosapentaenoic) and the Omega-6 family (the main of which are linoleic and gamma-linolenic). The amount and balance of these acids can seriously affect a person's health. Excessive consumption of linoleic acid can lead to an overconcentration of inflammatory eicosanoids in the body, which can constrict blood vessels, reduce the lumen of the bronchi and increase blood pressure.
