Pharmacological action

Peppermint leaf - a herbal remedy. It causes moderate sedative, antianginal, carminative, antihypoxic effects, choleretic, antiseptic, analgesic, antiemetic effect. The therapeutic effects are mainly due to the components of the essential oil, of which the most studied is menthol (60%).

When ingested (under the tongue), menthol irritates the cold receptors of the oral mucosa, which stimulates the formation and release of enkephalins, endorphins, dynorphins and peptides, which play an important role in the regulation of pain, permeability and vascular tone, in the modulation of various mediator systems.

The result is a reflex expansion of the vessels of the heart, brain, lungs. Menthol stimulates the respiratory center, suppresses the vomiting reflex. Menthol and other components of the essential oil have an antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles of the gastrointestinal tract and urinary tract, and gently stimulate the secretion of digestive glands.

Menthol in combination with mint leaf flavonoids provide a choleretic effect. Esters of isovaleric acid provide a sedative effect.

Menthol, betapinene, limonene, cineole, tannins and ursolic acid provide antimicrobial, antifungal effects and help restore the functions of the ciliated epithelium of the upper respiratory tract. Expectorant, mucolytic and moderate antihypoxic effects are preserved by inhalation with peppermint oil.

Dosage and administration

3 filter bags are placed in glass or enamel dishes, pour 200 ml (1 cup) boiling water, cover and insist for 15 minutes, periodically pressing the bags with a spoon, then squeeze them.

The volume of the resulting infusion was adjusted with boiled water to 200 ml.

Take orally 1 / 2-1 / 3 cup 2-3 times a day 15 minutes before meals.

Shake the infusion before use.

Side effects

Possibly: allergic reaction. Menthol with inhalation in children can cause bronchospasm and reflex respiratory depression.

Rarely: slight nausea, lacrimation, dizziness when taking menthol preparations under the tongue.

When applied to the skin, hyperemia, irritation, burning, rarely rashes are possible.
