pharmachologic effect
Herbal remedy. Marshmallow root contains plant mucus (up to 35%), asparagine, betaine, pectin, starch. It has an enveloping, emollient, expectorant, anti-inflammatory effect. Plant mucus covers the mucous membranes with a thin layer, which remains on the surface for a long time and protects them from irritation. As a result, the inflammatory process is reduced and spontaneous tissue regeneration is facilitated. When exposed to the gastric mucosa, the protective effect of the film from plant mucus is the longer and more effective, the higher the acidity of the gastric juice (the viscosity of plant mucus increases when it comes into contact with hydrochloric acid).
Side effect
Allergic reactions are possible.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
Application during pregnancy and during breastfeeding is possible in cases where the expected benefit of therapy to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant.
special instructions
The formation of a film of plant mucus on the surface of the mucous membrane of the upper respiratory tract gives not only a pronounced therapeutic effect, but also contributes to a longer local effect of other drugs.
As an expectorant, marshmallow preparations can be used in combination with sodium bicarbonate.
Drug interactions
Mukaltin can be prescribed simultaneously with other drugs used in the treatment of bronchopulmonary diseases.
Mukaltin should not be used concurrently with drugs containing codeine and other antitussive drugs, as this makes it difficult to cough up liquefied sputum.
