Clinical and pharmacological group: Laxative drug with osmotic properties
Pharmaco-therapeutic group: Laxative
pharmachologic effect
Osmotic laxative. A high-molecular substance, which is long linear polymers that, using hydrogen bonds, are able to hold water molecules. Increases osmotic pressure and volume of fluid contained in the intestine, enhancing peristalsis. Increases the volume of chyme, prevents the loss of electrolytes with feces. Restores the evacuation reflex, does not change the pH of the chyme.
The action of the drug is based on a combination of a high molecular weight polymer with an isotonic solution of electrolytes. Macrogol prevents the absorption of water from the stomach and intestines and promotes the accelerated evacuation of intestinal contents through frequent bowel movements. The electrolytes contained in the preparation prevent the disruption of the body's water-electrolyte balance.
Pharmacokinetics
Pharmacokinetic studies confirm the absence of absorption and metabolism of macrogol when taken orally.
