Pharmacotherapeutic group: Iron drug.
Pharmacological properties:
Ferlatum Fol - a preparation of iron and calcium folinate, replenishes the lack of iron and folate in the body.
The main function of iron is to carry oxygen to tissues. Iron is a part of hemoglobin, myoglobin, iron-containing enzymes, cytochromes, carries electrons and works as a catalyst for oxidation, hydroxylation and other metabolic processes.
Ferlatum Fol contains iron-protein succinylate, which is a complex compound where ferric atoms (Fe3 +) are surrounded by a semisynthetic protein carrier that prevents damage to the gastric mucosa. The protein carrier is re-dissolved in the duodenum, releasing iron at the site of its best absorption.
Trivalent iron enters the bloodstream from the intestine by active absorption, which explains the impossibility of overdose and poisoning.
Calcium folinate is a calcium salt of folinic acid that replenishes folate deficiencies in the body.
Indications for use:
- Treatment of latent and clinically significant iron deficiency (iron deficiency anemia) and folate;
- Preventive therapy for iron and folate deficiency during pregnancy, lactation, active growth; after prolonged bleeding, against the background of inadequate and unbalanced nutrition.
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to the drug;
- Iron overload (hemochromatosis);
- Violation of iron utilization (lead anemia, sideroachrestic anemia);
- Non-iron deficiency anemia (hemolytic anemia; megaloblastic anemia caused by a lack of vitamin B12);
- Chronic pancreatitis;
- Cirrhosis of the liver.
Carefully:
Caution should be exercised in patients with: gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, malabsorption in pathology of the small intestine (enteritis, malabsorption syndrome, resection of the small intestine, resection of the stomach according to Billroth II with the inclusion of the duodenum).
Pregnancy and lactation:
The use of Ferlatum Fol is especially recommended for the prevention and treatment of iron and folate deficiency that develops during pregnancy and lactation.
Method of administration and dosage:

Side effects:
In rare cases, the appearance of gastrointestinal disorders is possible, which disappear when the dose is reduced or the drug is discontinued.
Overdose:
So far, no signs of intoxication and excessive intake of Ferlatum Foul in the body have been described.
Interaction with other medicinal products:
There was no interaction of Ferlatum Fol with other drugs of their simultaneous use.
Iron absorption can be increased with the simultaneous administration of more than 200 mg of ascorbic acid and decreased with the use of antacids. Chloramphenicol causes a delayed response to iron therapy.
No pharmacological interaction was noted with concomitant treatment with H2-receptor antagonists.
Some antineoplastic and anti-leukemic drugs (aminopterin, methotrexate, and other pterin derivatives) act as folate antagonists.

The continuous period of use of Ferlatum Fol should not exceed 6 months, with the exception of cases of chronic blood loss (menorrhagia, hemorrhoids, etc.) and pregnancy.
