Castor oil.

Description

Transparent, thick and viscous liquid from light yellow to yellow; the smell is weak.

In air, in a thin layer, it slowly thickens, but does not form a dense or hard film.

When cooled to - 16 ? C, it solidifies into a whitish buttery mass.

Pharmacodynamics:

When taken orally, it is cleaved by lipase in the small intestine to form ricinoleic acid, which causes irritation of the intestinal receptors along its entire length and a reflex increase in peristalsis. The laxative effect usually occurs within 5-6 hours. When castor oil is taken, a reflex contraction of the muscles of the uterus is also observed.
