Pharmacological action
Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic from the group of macrolides-azalides. Possesses a wide spectrum of antimicrobial action. The mechanism of action of azithromycin is associated with the suppression of protein synthesis of the microbial cell. By binding to the 50S - subunit of the ribosome, it inhibits peptide translocase at the stage of translation and suppresses protein synthesis, slowing down the growth and reproduction of bacteria. In high concentrations, it has a bactericidal effect.
Has activity against a number of gram-positive, gram-negative, anaerobic, intracellular and other microorganisms.
Indications
Infectious and inflammatory diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to the drug:
Ј Infections of the upper respiratory tract and ENT organs (pharyngitis / tonsillitis, sinusitis, otitis media);
Ј Infections of the lower respiratory tract: acute bronchitis, exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, incl. caused by atypical pathogens;
Ј Infections of the skin and soft tissues (erysipelas, impetigo, secondarily infected dermatoses);
Ј The initial stage of Lyme disease (borreliosis) - erythema migrans (Erythemamigrans);
Infections of the genitourinary tract caused by Chlamydiatrachomatis (urethritis, cervicitis).
Contraindications
Ј Hypersensitivity to antibiotics of the macrolide group;
Ј Severe violations of liver and kidney function;
Ј Children under 12 years of age with a body weight of less than 45 kg (for this dosage form);
Ј Breast-feeding;
Ј Simultaneous reception with ergotamine and dihydroergotamine.
Dosage and administration
The drug is administered orally 1 time per day. The bioavailability of the drug in tablet form does not depend on food intake.
Children 6 months and older are recommended to use the drug in the form of a suspension for oral administration or 125 mg tablets.
The dosage is selected by the attending physician in accordance with the indications.
Side effects
are rare (in 1% of cases or less).
From the digestive system: melena, cholestatic jaundice, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, decreased appetite, gastritis, a reversible moderate increase in the activity of liver enzymes.
From the urinary system: nephritis.
From the reproductive system: vaginal candidiasis.
From the side of the cardiovascular system: palpitations, chest pains.
From the side of the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system: dizziness, headache, vertigo, drowsiness.
Overdose
Symptoms: nausea, temporary hearing loss, vomiting, diarrhea.
Treatment: gastric lavage, symptomatic therapy.
