Ammonia is an analeptic
has a stimulating effect on the respiratory center - reflexively, acting through the receptors of the upper respiratory tract (the end of the trigeminal nerve).
Inhalation of high concentrations of ammonia vapors causes reflex respiratory arrest.
When applied topically to the skin - antiseptic effect.
With prolonged contact, the irritating effect on the skin and mucous membranes can turn into a cauterizing (coagulation of proteins) with the development of hyperemia, swelling and soreness.
It is quickly excreted with exhaled air.
Indications
Ammonia is used as an ambulance to stimulate breathing and remove patients from fainting.
Topically: in the form of lotions for insect bites, as well as to neutralize acidic toxins from insect and snake bites.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the active substance.
For external use - skin diseases (including dermatitis, eczema),
children's age up to 3 years.
Side effects
Respiratory arrest, hypersalivation, sore throat, hyperemia of the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, burns of the esophagus and stomach (when ingested).
How to take, course of administration and dosage
Inhalation, topically.
To excite breathing and remove patients from a fainting state - by inhalation: gently bring a small piece of cotton wool or gauze soaked in ammonia to the nasal openings (for 0.5-1 s) or use an ampoule with a braid (when breaking off the tip of the ampoule, the cotton-gauze braid is soaked in solution) ...
For insect bites, apply topically in the form of lotions.
