In surgical practice, it is used to disinfect the skin of the hands according to the method of S.I. Spasokukotsky and I.G. Kochergin (to prepare a solution, 25 ml of ammonia is dissolved in 5 liters of warm boiled water).

For insect bites, they are used in the form of lotions.

pharmachologic effect

Analeptic, antiseptic; when inhaled, it irritates the mucous membrane of the respiratory tract and reflexively stimulates the respiratory and vasomotor centers. In high concentrations, it causes reflex respiratory arrest. Has a disinfectant effect on the skin. With prolonged contact, the irritating effect on the skin can turn into a cauterizing effect (coagulation of proteins) with the development of hyperemia, swelling and soreness.

Pharmacokinetics

It is quickly excreted by any route of administration, mainly by the lungs and bronchial glands.

Side effect

Respiratory arrest (reflex, when inhaled in high concentration), hypersalivation, sore throat, hyperemia of the oral mucosa. Burns of the esophagus and stomach (if accidentally ingested).
