DESCRIPTION

Wood's lamp is a fluorescent diagnostic lamp, the principle of operation of which is based on the emission of light in a narrow long-wavelength spectrum of the ultraviolet range and gives almost no visible light. It is often referred to as a black light lamp. Working wavelength 365 nm.

In medicine, a Wood's lamp is a device designed to diagnose skin conditions, including mycoses - fungal diseases and some types of dermatoses. Wood's lamp is used in cosmetology clinics, skin dispensaries, in children's institutions for preventive examinations.

By the glow of the skin under the influence of the radiation of this device, one can determine its condition. So, healthy normal skin gives a light blue glow, violet indicates sensitive, indigo about dry skin. Wood's lamp gives off inflamed skin with a white glow, and fungal lesions with a greenish glow. It is also used to examine the affected areas of eyebrows, eyelashes, scalp, vellus hair, nails.

Before starting the diagnosis, the patient's skin is thoroughly cleaned, the eyes are protected from direct exposure to the lamp. The examination is carried out in complete darkness from a distance of 15-20 cm, the exposure time is no more than 2 minutes.

The source of ultraviolet light is most often two mercury-quartz lamps, the total power of which is 18 W. Often, Wood's lamp has a built-in lens (2-, 3-fold magnification), which allows an extremely detailed examination of the area under study and, accordingly, more reliably and efficiently carry out fluorescent diagnostics.
